Adversary system

The adversarial system (or adversary system) of law is the system of law that relies for its results on the skill of opposing advocates in presenting their positions and not on some neutral party investigating the truth of the case.

Another unsatisfactory definition...how are the advocates "opposing" each other? That seems essential to explain.
