Ceres, equivalent in Roman Mythology to the Greek Demeter, daughter of Saturn and Rhea. Wife-sister of Jupiter and mother of Prosperpina. Ceres is the goddess of grain, growing plants and the love that a mother bears for her child. Personified and celebrated by women in secret rituals at the festival of Ambarvalia, held during the month of May.


Ceres is the largest asteroid, and also the first to be discovered, with a diameter of 1003 km, and a surface area of 1,800,000 km2. Discovered on January 1 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi.
