Kilo is a prefix in the SI system denoting 1000. "k" is the commonly used abbreviation of kilo. One kilogram thus means 1000 grams and "kilo" by itself often means kilogram. Note that in computing, kilo does not always exactly denote 1000 (rather 1024).
