Spartacus was the name of a Roman slave who led a large slave uprising (73-71 BC). He was defeated by Marcus Licinius Crassus. Spartacus was a native of Thrace, a region to the north-east of mainland Greece long considered especially barbaric by the Greeks.
A historical novel of that name about him, by Howard Fast was filmed by Stanley Kubrick. It starred Kirk Douglas in the title role.
