The invasion of England by Germanic peoples, amongst them Jutes, Angles, Frisians and Saxons is collectively known as the Saxon conquest, although this is something of a misnomer. The Romans had largely abandoned Britain by the end of the 4th century AD, and the settlement of the east coast of England, which was to lead to a gradual encroachment by these Saxon settlers, was a consequence of displacement of peoples on mainland Europe.
