On February 26, 1993, a van bomb planted by terrorists, allegedly backed by Osama bin Laden, exploded in the underground garage of the World Trade Center/North Tower . Six people were killed and over a thousand injured. Six Islamic extremist conspirators were convicted of the crime in 1997 and 1998 and given prison sentences of 240 years each.
