Bretwalda from 477 to approximately 514, and thought to be king of the South Saxons (although some accounts put his position of power in what is now The Midlands), Ælle led the Anglo-Saxon army at the battle of Mons Badonicus, possibly in 496, though some sources suggest it was later (and others, earlier), and some say that Ælle was killed in the battle.
