An assault gun is an armoured fighting vehicle similar to a tank, but does not have a traversable turret. It's main gun is mounted to fire forward, and usually surrounded by fixed panels of armor, but the roof may be open. Assault guns saw their main use during World War II, in the hands of the Germans and Soviets. Because they lacked a turret, they were cheap and easy to manufacture. Examples include the German Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger.
