A large battle in World War I with more than one million casualties. The British, French and allies attempted to break through the German lines. At the end of the battle they had gained about six miles.

The battle was preceded by artillery bombardment and the initial attack was on July 1, 1916. It ended approximately on November 18 of the same year.

The british used the tank for the first time in this battle.
