Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, abbot and theologian (born 1090, at Fontaines, near Dijon, France; died at Clairvaux, August 21, 1153). Bernard was born into a noble family of Burgundy. He was destined for the clergy at an early age, but entered the monastery of Citeâux in 1113.
