Ceawlin was Bretwalda from 560 to 591, and king of the West Saxons, or Wessex. Led the combined Saxon armies in the decisive Battle of Deorham in 577. This resulted in the splitting of the Cornish Celts from the Welsh Celts, with the capture of most of the land surrounding Gloucester, Cirencester, Bristol and Bath.
