Short-hand notation for centimeter-gram-second, cgs is a unit system closely related to SI units. The units of cgs are as follows:

quantity unit abbreviation base unit defintion equivalent SI unit
length centimeter cm meter
mass gram g kilogram
time second sec second
  • force: 1 (gram)(centimeter)(second)-2 = 1 dyne
  • energy: erg = dyne*meter
  • power: erg/sec
  • charge: esu = &radic(g*cm3sec-2
  • electric potential = statvolt (erg/esu)
  • electric field: statvolt/cm = 1 dyne/esu
  • magnetic field: gauss = oersted = statvolt/cm = dyne/esu
  • magnetic flux: gauss*cm2
  • pressure = (? can't recall the name?)
  • resistance = sec/cm
  • resistivity = sec
  • Capacitance = cm
  • inductance = sec2/cm /Talk
