Pen name of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954), French novelist. Colette turned to writing after a brief career as a music-hall dancer. Her first books, the Claudine series, were published under the name of her first husband, Henri Gauthier-Villars ('Willy'). Colette was a provocative figure throughout her life, engaging in lesbian affairs between husbands and working with collaborationists during the World War II occupation of France.
