Diabetes is rather a generic term, mostly relating to the use or production of insulin in the human body. To a layman or as a form of ellipsis it can mean diabetes mellitus. Etymology of the word comes from Greek and means "excess of urine".

Passing abnormal volume of urine can be a leading symptom of several diseases, most commonly, of kidneys but suprisingly word diabetes is connected with two completely different diseases :
