Honorary title granted to the wife of the president of the United States. The current First Lady is Laura Welch Bush. Some of the more famous first ladies in history were Dolly Madison, Martha Washington, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The first lady in not an elected position and has no official governmental duties. Unofficially, she attends many ceremonies and functions of state with the president.

The term is also used for the wife of the chief government official of a country, state, or city.

If a woman is elected president, will her husband be the First Man?
