Geotechnical engineering is concerned with the engineering properties of earth materials. Geotechnical engineers work with data from earth core samples to specify the requirements for man-made structures that will be built on a site. These structures include foundations, footings, retaining walls and dams, each of which applies different demands upon the surrounding soil.
