Guernica is a small city in the Basque region of Spain. It is mostly noted for the bombing by the German Luftwaffe (Condor Legion) on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.

Pablo Picasso, asked to paint a picture to decorate the Spanish Pavillion during the Paris World Fair, created a painting depicting the tragic event and called it Guernica.
