LaTeX (commonly pronounced LAY-tekh or LAH-tekh to rhyme with "blecch") is a popular set of add-on macros for the TEX typesetting system. The LaTeX2e version has become powerful and popular enough that people rarely use raw TEX anymore.

LaTeX has a peculiar license called LPPL, not compatible with the GNU General Public License, that requires modified files to carry a modified filename; however, this ensures that files that depend on other files will produce the expected behavior and avoids problems similar to DLL hell.

LyX is a visual document processor that uses LaTeX for a back-end.
