American painter (1871-1956), born of German-American parents and trained lived in Germany for many years.

Feininger taught at the Bauhaus for several years. He returned to America in 1936 after his work was exhibited in the 'degenerate art' (Entarte Kunst) by the Nazis, but before the 1937 exhibition in Munich.
