Nickname(s): the Crescent City

New Orleans, one of Louisiana's largest cities, is located on the Mississippi River, a small distance upstream from where the Mississippi enters the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans is well known for its creole culture and the practice of Voodoo by a few of its residents.

New Orleans' claim to fame is its Mardi Gras (literally, Fat Tuesday) celebration, which is held just before the beginning of the Christian liturgical season of Lent.
