The 928 was the first fully designed Porsche automobile, divesting fully from the Volkswagen heritage of the previous models (such as the Porsche 911). The car features a front-mounted V8 engine and a rear-mounted gearbox.

The design started in 1971, and the sales started in 1979. The design goals was to make a luxury sports coupe for the US market, to replace the ageing 911, but the 911 proved to be more popular in the long run, so the 928 was discontiued in 1995, but the 911 lives on.
