Raggamuffin is a kind of reggae that focuses on spoken words very much like rap does. The ragga rapper is called toaster or dee jay, early dee jays were I Roy, U Roy and Dillinger; Yellowman laid foundations to modern raggamuffin and people like Buju Banton, Supercat, Ninjaman and Shabba Ranks were top dee jays in the 1990s. Musically, raggamuffin is characterized by often very basic beats, which dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson links to its African roots.
