Rani Laksmi Bay was the female leader of Jhansi, in the Maratha Empire. Her territory was taken from her under the Doctrine of Lapse in 1853. She led a revolt against the British during the Events of 1857 and died fighting.

Later, when the Indian National Army created a female unit, it was named after her.
