Saladin (1137-1193) (in full Salah Ad-din Yusuf Ibn Ayyub) was the founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty.

Having his initial military education under the command of a Seljuk statesman and soldier, he had his first achievements by defending Egypt against Crusaders and abolishing the Fatimid caliphate. His fame reached its zenith, when he recaptured Jerusalem on October 1187 after 88 years of Crusader rule and successfully defended the city against the Third Crusade.
