A tool of Nanotechnology created at IBM Zurich in 1981 by Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer. They shared the Nobel Prize in physics in 1986. The STM allows scientists to see and position individual atoms, many orders of magnitude beyond the capabilities of conventional electron microscopes.
