The Scottish Highlands are considered to be the half of Scotland north of the Highland Boundary Fault, whereas the Highland Council manages a much smaller region within this broad defenition.

This area is generally sparsely populated, with several mountain ranges dominating the region. Regional administrative centres include Inverness.
