Styx is the river across which the souls of the dead are ferried by Charon (the ferryman of ashes). The River styx was one of the five rivers in Hades. It was the principal river of the lower world, which had to be crossed in passing to the regions of the dead.

Styx was primarily a feature in the afterworld of Greek Mythology, but has been described as a feature present in the hell of christianity as well, notably in the Divine Comedy.

Styx was also the name of a rock band popular in the midwest US in the late 70s early 80s, contemporaneous with other midwestern favorites such as Supertramp, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, and Bob Seger.
