At normal pressures, most compounds and elements will posses three different states at different temperatures. These are solid, liquid, and gas.

An element or substance that sublimes passes directly from the solid to the gaseous state or vice versa with no liquid intermediary stage. Carbon Dioxide is a common example of a compound that will do this at normal pressures.
